After a three-hour surgery, Honda announced that the procedure was "a success" and Marc Márquez is already in post-operative recovery

Marc Márquez goes well after fourth "uncomplicated" surgery on his right arm

Marc Márquez announced last week that he would be out indefinitely from MotoGP to perform a fourth surgery on his right arm. This Friday (3), Honda communicated that the three-hour operation, performed in the United States, was successful.

"For three hours, Dr. Joaquin Sánchez Sotelo and his team performed an osteotomy of the humerus. The surgery was deemed a success without complications by Dr. Sánchez as Marc Márquez entered the post-operative stage of his treatment at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota," the team announced.

"The surgery consisted of the removal of the two screws from the posterior plate previously placed by Dr. Samuel Antuña in December 2020, followed by a rotational osteotomy of the humerus," the doctor in charge of the surgery stated.

In such a procedure called 'osteotomy', Dr. Sanchéz also explains that in this new operation, a cut was made in the humerus. The bone was turned by approximately 30 degrees, before stabilizing it in this position with a metal plate and screws. Márquez will remain in the United States for the next few days before returning to Spain to continue his treatment plan.

The Spaniard has been unable to adapt his riding style to Honda's 2022 bike. The movement in his right arm was extremely affected by consecutive surgical interventions two years ago. Last week, the Spaniard from Cervera had already said that he hoped the surgery would be a solution to get back to "enjoying riding the bike."

"The most important thing is that they have offered me a solution, they are giving me tranquility, because I am not doing what I want, but what the doctors are saying, that I have to have surgery, which is the solution. For me, to have the surgery and go back to having fun will be a victory", he said.

Injury Schedule

The Spanish rider's injury timeline is extensive. On October 21, 2011, Marc Márquez crashed on Friday morning in Malaysia after the officials failed to warn that the track was wet. The initial report was of severe bruising to his shoulder and left foot. The multi-champion did not do the rest of the practice sessions in Sepang, and only did one lap in qualifying. On Sunday, October 23, he announced that he would not race. There, at the age of 18, he reported vision problems for the first time.

Three days later, after being evaluated by Dr. Xavier Mir and Dr. Angel Charte, he was released after 48 hours of observation for a periorbital edema. In early November, he was barred for the season finale in Valencia. Early the following year, Márquez underwent surgery in Barcelona to resolve paralysis of the right upper oblique muscle, caused by trauma to the right fourth cranial nerve.

In 2020, the Spaniard fractured the humerus in his right arm after a crash in turn 3 at Jerez. He was hit in the arm by the Honda wheel and operated on by Dr. Xavier Mir on July 21, 2020. The rider tried to race the following weekend, but dropped out. 13 days later, he again underwent surgery by Xavier Mir at Dexeus in Barcelona after damaging the titanium plate due to stress.

In December, still in 2020, the Spaniard underwent a third surgery on his right arm, this time at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid, with doctor Samuel Antuña. The bone graft operation (hip bone) took eight hours. Shortly after the medical intervention, Honda announced that doctors identified an infection in the bone at the fracture site, which delayed the calcification process and kept Marquez on antibiotics for a long time.

After returning to action in April 2021 - and even winning a race two months later in Germany, as well as a victory on a timed circuit in Misano in October - the rider suffered a concussion after crashing during an endurance training session. The episode also caused diplopia (double vision) in the six-time champion. This year, in March, the vision problems appeared again, this time because of a fall in Indonesia.
