Free pass for Nakagami shows inconsistency and calls into question MotoGP race direction

Japanese made a double strike when trying to gain about ten positions in one shot, but did not even receive a warning, as the stewards considered it a normal race move

The controversial first corner of the MotoGP Catalunya GP is still a story. 12th on the grid, Takaaki Nakagami started like a missile and tried to gain about ten positions in the first brake, but all he got was a double strike: he knocked out Francesco Bagnaia and Álex Rins in a single shot. In the case of the Italian, it was a hard blow in the World Championship classification. For the Spaniard, the result was a fractured left wrist.

Nakagami, who hit his head on the rear tire of Pecco's Ducati in an absolutely terrifying move, the incident was nothing more than a scare. The LCR rider spent the night in observation in a local ICU, but was unchanged and no injuries were found. Taka also escaped a tug of war from the stewards, who considered it a normal racing incident.

His colleagues, however, did not see things in the same light. Fabio Quartararo, Jorge Martin, and Johann Zarco, the podium trio on Sunday, rebuked the maneuver, as did Franco Morbidelli, Pecco, and Suzuki boss Livio Suppo, who even protested, but was ignored by the stewards.

Juliana Tesser comments on how the Barcelona controversy puts the MotoGP race management in check, and shows that the stewards fail in the basics when it comes to preserving the integrity of those who are the soul of the show.
