Alexander Rossi led the first free practice for Indy at Road America, held on Friday afternoon (10). With a time of 1min45s602, the driver led a double for Andretti in the activity, as he had teammate Colton Herta 0s133 behind.

Indianapolis 500 winner Marcus Ericsson of Sweden led Ganassi to third place, followed by Penske's Will Power, the current championship leader. Indy champion in 2021 and last winner at Road America, Álex Palou rounded out the top five.

Next came New Zealander Scott McLaughlin, followed by six-time champion Scott Dixon, Josef Newgarden, Simon Pagenaud, and Mexican Pato O'Ward, who rounded out the top-10.

Brazilian Helio Castroneves was only 25th in the session at Elkhart Lake. With Meyer Shank, he had the best time of 1min48s171, and ended up with the only red flag of the day when he spun in turn 12.

The cars are back on track at Elkhart Lake this Saturday at 11:45 a.m. (ET) for the second free practice. Qualifying is scheduled for 2:45 pm.

The 75-minute free practice session started at 5:25 pm (Brasília time). The first moments of the session had many warm-up laps. After 15 minutes, only 8 drivers had recorded laps, with Andretti's Devlin DeFrancesco leading the way with 1min47s957.

The first place was taken by Juncos' Callum Ilott with 1min47s676. In the sequence, Andretti was back at the top, but now by Frenchman Romain Grosjean, with 1min46s930. The next new leader was Grosjean's teammate Alexander Rossi with a 1min46s671.

At 35 minutes into the session, the top-10 was made up of Rossi, Herta, Ericsson, Grosjean, Power, Newgarden, Palou, McLaughlin, Dixon, and Pagenaud. Time passed, but the top positions remained intact.

Brazilian Helio Castroneves was the one who ended up moving the practice. In 21st place, the Meyer Shank driver lost control at turn 12 and stopped on the grass, interrupting the session with the red flag. The stopwatch continued to run and was released with 13 minutes to go.

Josef Newgarden took Rossi off the top spot with a 1:46.171, but the lead didn't last long as Colton Herta put Andretti back on top with a 1:45.736. Eventually, Alexander retook the top spot with 1min45s602 and didn't lose it again.
