Rain interrupts first day of qualifying for Indianapolis 500 2022

The Indy had already moved the qualifying start time for the Indy 500 forward by one hour due to rain, which came with three hours left in the session, bringing out the yellow flag and interrupting the first day

The rain forecast for Saturday's qualifying session for the Indianapolis 500 came true. The weather began to close in the early afternoon at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and with just over 3 hours of session time remaining, the yellow flag was brought out because of the first drops.

The qualifying schedule had already been changed, being moved forward by an hour to ensure that all drivers could do at least one lap. Some drivers like Juan Pablo Montoya, Marco Andretti, and Colton Herta had technical problems on the first attempt, but were able to get on track to set a time and ensure their presence in the Indy 500.

Stefan Wilson, the last entry for the 106th edition of the Indy 500, was unable to take to the track due to a gearbox problem in his Dragon Speed. If the session is not resumed, the Briton will not participate in the race next Sunday, May 29.

Rain had already disrupted Indy's schedule this week. On Tuesday, the third free practice session was canceled due to bad weather. The weather also interfered with Fast Friday, on Friday, when strong winds impeded the teams' work.

The 12 fastest drivers on Saturday advance to the Fast 12 on Sunday, which will decide who will be the pole-position. At the time of the interruption, the top 12 were Rinus VeeKay, Pato O'Ward, Felix Rosenqvist, Álex Palou, Tony Kanaan, Jimmie Johnson, Ed Carpenter, Marcus Ericsson, Romain Grosjean, Scott Dixon, Willl Power, and Takuma Sato.
