Power defends Palou and laments the absence of "figure like Zak Brown" in Indy's past

Penske's Australian Will Power, second in the Indy standings, gave his viewpoint on the standoff between Álex Palou, Ganassi, and McLaren that has moved the week of the Toronto GP, the tenth round of the season.

Current Indy champion, Palou announced a deal with McLaren for 2023 hours after Ganassi disclosed that it had exercised its option to keep the Spaniard under contract next season. Álex does not yet know which category he will race in next year, but he has entered the Woking team's test program for previous F1 cars.

Power, 41, lamented the absence of McLaren CEO Zak Brown from Indy. The Australian revealed that he would consider moving to Formula 1 if the opportunity arose. The Australian has been racing in the category since 2006, back in the Champ Car days.

"I wish there had been a Zak Brown around when I was this age, when I first came to Indy. I feel like I would have a chance in Formula One. It's cool to see that because I know how they feel. I know how amazing it would be for Colton [Herta]. If he goes there, I hope he does well. It's fantastic to have a team like McLaren and Zak Brown in Indy. It's great for the category. It's good to see the young guys here, I think it's great what Zak is doing," Power commented at a press conference last Wednesday.

Herta, who is an Andretti driver at Indy, recently closed to become part of McLaren's Formula 1 testing program, and drove the 2021 MCLM35 in a closed activity at the Portimao racetrack in Portugal. Pato O'Ward has also tested for the category, and Palou's turn, now under a new contract, seems close.

"The relationship with F1 is 100% the reason Palou wants to be there. I don't blame him, I would do the same. If you had a chance to race in Formula 1, the way it is big now, yes, you would want to go there. You think about the reach that McLaren has, with Formula E, Formula 1, endurance. It's a good place and organization to be involved in," he added.

Indy holds the Toronto GP in Canada this Sunday (17). The race is scheduled to start at 4:30 pm (Brasília time).
