Parque Fundidora has announced a project to rebuild its 3.4 kilometer street circuit. The circuit is located in the city of Monterrey, Mexico, and hosted CART races between 2001 and 2006. Brazilian Cristiano da Matta won two editions, in 2001 and 2002, while Bruno Junqueira triumphed in the last race held on the circuit in 2006.

The reconstruction of 50,000 square meters of asphalt aims to attract Indy and Nascar to the city, and will cost 24 million Mexican pesos (approximately R$ 6.2 million). Construction began this month and is expected to be completed in October.

Local vehicle Milenio revealed through a government source that the project is to have races as early as 2023 or 2024 at Fundidora Park. "Everything indicates that there is the intention to leave the track in this condition so that racing can return at some point to Fundidora. There is interest from Nascar to come to Monterrey, but still unofficially, and it would be for 2023 or 2024. Formula 1 not at this time, but Nascar and Indy are options that are being explored," indicated the Mexican government official.

Mexico is going through a historic phase in world motorsport, with Sergio Pérez fighting for victory in Formula 1, Pato O'Ward fighting for the title in Indy, and Daniel Suárez, who recently became the first Mexican to win in Nascar.

Fundidora Park is so named because it houses a former metallurgy plant that went bankrupt in the late 1980s. The site was then transformed into a park for the use of the people of Monterrey. Currently, NASCAR has no races outside the United States. Indy has only one in another country, the Toronto GP, in Canada, which happens this Sunday (17th), with full coverage by GRANDE PRÊMIO.
