Reigning IndyCar Series champion Álex Palou had to retire from the Elkhart Lake GP after being touched by his teammate, Swede Marcus Ericsson, on the fifth lap
Reigning IndyCar Series champion Álex Palou abandoned the GP of Elkhart Lake on Sunday after only five laps. The Spaniard was touched by his Ganassi teammate, Swede Marcus Ericsson, who tried a daring maneuver on the inside to gain third position and ended up touching Palou's left front wheel.
The suspension of the #10 Ganassi car broke, and the Spaniard abandoned the race. On the radio, Álex ironically thanked the team of Ericsson's #8 car. In an interview to the official IndyCar broadcast, Palou criticized his teammate's posture and left a warning for the future.
"Everyone saw what happened, he tried to win the race in the first laps. But it's okay, we also know how to play this game and we will do it next time," said the winner of the 2021 race at Road America.
The incident occurred shortly after the first yellow flag, caused by a spin by Jimmie Johnson. The yellow flag was raised a second time to remove Palou's car from the track.
