Josef Newgarden took victory on the Road America circuit at Elkhart Lake, holding on to his lead in a final three-lap race. The two-time F-Indy champion started the race in second place behind Alexander Rossi, but managed to gain the lead during the first round of pit stops and never looked back.

It wasn't easy, however, as some late caution periods led to a final sprint to the checkered flag. Thoughts of last year's disappointment, which saw Newgarden miss out on a sure victory because of a faulty gearbox, ran through his head, but the scenario did not repeat itself.

He took his third victory in eight races this season and moved back into third place in points. Rossi, instead of pressing Newgarden in the final race, had to defend himself against Marcus Ericsson. The Swede successfully took P2 in the first corner and Rossi had to settle for the last step of the podium.

The race was relatively free of yellow flags in the middle of the 55-lap event, but was marred by a series of warnings at the start and finish. Will Power had a less than ideal start to the race, as he was touched by Devlin DeFrancesco in the braking zone in turn 5.

He spun into the wall and had to get help from the safety team to get going again. The former points leader finished 19th after a long day fighting in the middle of the pack.

Jimmie Johnson and Alex Palou also had their own incidents near the start of the race, with each bringing out a yellow flag. Pato O'Ward was knocking on the door of a top 10 finish when his Chevy engine failed with only eight laps remaining, bringing out a late yellow flag that led to the dramatic finish.

That race to the finish was cut short to just three laps because Helio Castroneves spun and got stuck in the grass when the grid would have a green flag after the earlier incident.

For his victory, Newgarden completed the "PeopleReady Force for Good Challenge," which awards the first driver to win on all three track types with a $1 million bonus, which will be split between him and a charity.

After five consecutive weekends on the track, drivers and teams will have a two-week break before heading to another mixed circuit at Mid-Ohio on July 3.
