Under sweltering conditions, the IndyCar Series held the first race of a double-round weekend at Iowa Speedway. The victory, fourth of the season and also on the short oval, went to Josef Newgarden.
Will Power led the field at the start, but could only hold that advantage for the first 22 laps. Josef Newgarden got the jump on the first restart of the race and passed Power in turn 1.
Once Newgarden was able to pass Power after the first yellow flag, he never looked back. He avoided challenges from several drivers, including Marcus Ericsson and Pato O'Ward, who got ahead later in the race.
Newgarden led 208 of the 250 laps, and the victory propels Newgarden into second place in the points standings. It also puts him just 11 points behind Ericsson, who holds the lead despite a poor result a lap behind.
O'Ward crossed the line in second and was hindered by a considerable amount of traffic in the closing laps. Power finished on the last step of the podium, completing a strong weekend for the veteran. He will have a second chance to win a race from pole again on Sunday, where there will be 50 more laps.
Towards the end of the race, almost everyone was struggling to keep control of their cars. Highly degraded tires proved very difficult to control in the final stint, when the leaders ran more than 80 laps in their last set.
Alex Palou lost a few places in the final laps as he struggled more than others to control his car and finished one lap behind in sixth. He was behind his Ganassi teammate, Scott Dixon, who gained positions in the final laps.
There were a couple of yellows that interrupted the afternoon, the first of which was caused by Jimmie Johnson's spin. He didn't hit the wall, however, and managed to bring home in a respectable 11th place.
The first crash of the day was Felix Rosenqvist, who hit the wall hard after losing control of his Arrow McLaren SP Chevy. Later in the race, Ed Carpenter had a similar accident with a hard hit to the barriers.
