Edoardo Mortara saw Nyck de Vries scream champion last year and had to suffer the vice-championship, but he came with everything in 2022 and shows that he is in the best phase of the year in a crucial moment for the championship decision

With four drivers separated by only 15 points - leader Edoardo Mortara has 139, while fourth Mitch Evans has 124 - it is impossible to say who will be the Formula E champion at the end of the season in August. However, one thing can be said: the Swiss Venturi driver has paved a firm path so far, which places him as a direct favorite to win his first world title.
Mortara's numbers in 2022 are impressive: The only two times he didn't score this year - race 2 in Rome and eP Monaco - were on occasions when he had to retire from the race. In all the others, he came away with at least six points - his lowest score - and finally took over the top spot in the championship, after relying on a day to forget from then-leader Stoffel Vandoorne.
The unpredictability of Formula E could make Mortara's favoritism fall apart in the next weekend's two races in New York, but the season's history indicates a different trajectory. Besides being extremely regular, Edoardo is at his best moment of the year: he has scored 90 points in the last four races, with his first two poles in the category and a fastest lap in the period.

In other words: in the most important moment of the championship, in which the calendar foresees three more double rounds until the closing, the Swiss raised the level and started to occupy always the first positions - the last time he did not go to the podium was precisely in Monte Carlo, when he abandoned on April 30. If races in which he failed to complete are disregarded, Mortara last failed to get on the podium in race 1 in Rome - the fourth round of the championship, held on April 9.
Since then, Lucas Di Grassi's teammate has been known for his competitiveness, always fighting for the first positions and also standing out in the standings. After trying hard, Mortara finally found the right spot with the first pole position of his career in Germany, and repeated the feat the next day.
As for the direct competitors, absolutely all of them are in a clear position to take the title. Stoffel Vandoorne was leading the race until he arrived in Morocco, but a bad day in qualifying left him with a lot of work to do in the race. He finished eighth, which was still damage control, and remains in third place.

Mitch Evans, the fourth-placed driver, proves to be almost unstoppable on his best days - at least, he has been that way in 2022. However, he still lacks the necessary regularity to finally take the lead. But keep an eye on the New Zealander: When he adapts to a track, the Jaguar driver has shown a blistering pace - and does not hide when sharing the corners with his rivals - which can generate a very interesting advantage in a championship with three double rounds to go.
Finally, second place Jean-Èric Vergne. Certainly the most regular driver in the championship, the Frenchman is in second place without having won a single race in 2022, but scoring in absolutely every race. Two-time champion of the category and with qualities that justify any favoritism, what Vergne has lacked to be the highlight is exactly what Mortara has been achieving: wins. If he finally wins again, the DS Techeetah driver will pose a strong threat to the Swiss driver.
Something needs to be pointed out, however. With three double-headers to go until the end of the championship - in New York, London, and Seoul - Formula E could see the tables change a lot in just one weekend. Being the favorite does not mean that the driver has his hands on the cup, but rather that he is the one who has gathered the best conditions to do so. Should any of the competitors do something similar to what Mitch Evans did in Rome - when he won both races and scored 50 points in one weekend - the game could quickly change among the four contenders for the dream world title.
