Formula E lands in New York with 'biting' Mercedes and new leader

With New York's eP coming up this weekend, Formula E arrives in Brooklyn with Edoardo Mortara in the lead and Stoffel Vandoorne trying to make up ground after disaster in Morocco

Formula E will enter a decisive period starting next weekend. The eP New York, to be held in Brooklyn on July 16 and 17, will mark the first double round of the three rounds that will close the championship in August. And with everything that happened in Marrakech, the last stop before the United States, the race on American soil promises to be very important in the drivers' pretensions.

First, Edoardo Mortara secured the victory in Morocco and took over the championship lead, a position he could have already occupied if it weren't for the two pit stops he suffered this season. Apart from the two races in which he failed to finish, the Swiss Venturi driver arrives in New York with a sequence of four consecutive podiums and points in all the races he has completed.

On the other hand, Mortara's lead did not decide the fight for the Cup, which still has Jean-Éric Vergne, Stoffel Vandoorne, and Mitch Evans in good shape to take the lead - especially in the race for the title. It's not the only way to take the lead - especially considering the fact that a double round can yield 50 points for the same driver if he wins both rounds.

Among the other contenders for the position currently held by Mortara, Vandoorne arrives in New York with his Mercedes 'bitten' after the sequence of events in Marrakech. The then championship leader suffered from a brake temperature problem during qualifying, which meant starting from the back of the grid and practically guaranteeing that he would leave Morocco out of the lead.

However, despite actually losing the lead to Mortara, Vandoorne climbed up the field and managed to finish eighth - just two places behind his teammate Nyck de Vries. So he arrives in Brooklyn with the mission to repeat the performance of the last race, 'bitten' by not having had a chance to battle with his competitors.

In addition to Vandoorne's difficulties in Morocco, Mercedes is certainly looking to tell a different story in New York than it did last year, when it failed to score points in either of the two races: Vandoorne abandoned the first and was 12th in the second, while De Vries came 13th in race 1 and 18th in race 2.
