Wolff: We don't want "idiot" fans

Toto Wolff has given his opinion regarding the behavior of Formula 1 fans in Austria following the emergence of several worrying reports.

On Sunday, F1 released a statement confirming the reports of "unacceptable" behavior, with investigations to be completed together with the organizers and event security.

Cases of harassment have been shared by fans on social media, and the drivers have been expressing their concern about fan behavior.

When asked to comment on reports of harassment, the Mercedes boss gave a "stay away" warning to the guilty fans.

"First of all, this needs to stop," Wolff told the media. "If you are a true F1 fan, of any team or driver, you cannot be racist and homophobic because they don't fit in F1 and we don't want you."

"Anyone who abuses in any way - sexist, misogynist, homophobic or racist - is simply irrelevant and alcohol cannot excuse that."

"Sport polarizes and arouses emotions, but this does not. Again, we must condemn and make it clear that these few idiots have to stay away from us."

A large section of the public in Austria celebrated Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton's crash during qualifying, sparking criticism from leading F1 figures.

Hamilton and Mercedes reportedly received a complaint from a woman who was harassed by a group of men because of her cheering for the seven-time world champion.

Wolff warned that no one should make connections between fan preference and unacceptable behavior, blaming only "drunken idiots."

"On the other hand, we need to be careful. Just because there are some drunk idiots who haven't understood how the world is today, we shouldn't condemn 99.9 percent of the fans who came here," he added.

"There will always be those idiots around and we hope to provide a good show for the remaining fans. The idiots can stay home."

"It shouldn't sound like we are condemning a group of fans because that is not the case. I saw them climbing the fences and no one was booing when I looked, and they were intense."
