Several Formula 1 teams are experimenting with a flexible floor to prevent the crashes, reports The Race website. Toto Wolff says he is shocked, although he is happy for the FIA to intervene immediately.
According to the category regulations, teams cannot allow the floor to deviate by more than two millimeters. However, the flexible floor has increased this number to up to six millimeters, giving some teams more of an advantage than others.
This allows the teams to adjust their cars in such a way that the driver suffers less from the kicks. For Wolff it was a big surprise when he learned of the situation. However, he did not have to intervene, as the FIA decided to enlighten the teams immediately.
"Nobody had an idea until the FIA presented it at the last Technical Advisory Committee," says Wolff. "Which was a big surprise for all the teams, because what is in the regulations and what the intention of the regulations was, is quite clear. There is no argument why that could deviate further from what is in the regulations."
The Mercedes team boss, therefore, looks at the situation with an odd feeling. "A surprise to say the least, most shocking," concluded Wolff, who will start with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell at Silverstone in fifth and eighth, respectively.
