Williams downplays engine deal negotiations with Renault

Nicholas Latifi's boss has allayed fears that he may be unceremoniously let go immediately after his first home race in Canada this weekend.

It is widely reported that Oliver Piastri, Alpine's Australian reserve driver who is the reigning Formula 2 champion, will be loaned to Williams in 2023 and 2024.

Williams boss Jost Capito is not denying it. "Oscar is interesting for everyone who has a free seat," he told Sky Germany. "There is no question about it."

However, he does not confirm that there is a deal done - and also tried to shut down speculation that the 21-year-old Piastri's Williams career could begin immediately after this weekend. "That is definitely not the case," Capito insisted.

But yet another rumor is that Piastri's loan from Alpine to Williams could be bundled with an engine contract with Renault.

"It's all speculation at the moment," he assured. "We have a contract with Mercedes until the end of 2025 and there will be new regulations in 2026. A lot of water will flow down the (River) Rhine before then."
