Williams considers replacing Latifi and promoting Piastri's debut at the British GP

Unhappy with Nicholas Latifi's constant accidents, Williams is considering using Alpine's need to promote Oscar Piastri's Formula 1 debut to replace the Canadian

Despite winning the Formula 2 title last year, Oscar Piastri is still waiting for an opportunity to prove himself in Formula 1 - and it may be coming sooner than expected. According to RacingNews365, the Australian could make his debut in the premier class at the British GP, replacing Nicholas Latifi at Williams.

The website reports that while Alpine is looking for an option for Piastri to gain experience in F1 without losing the duo formed by Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon, Williams is still unhappy with the constant incidents caused by Latifi and the crashes - which have cost not only points in the championship, but also a concern with the spending ceiling this year.

So, if the information is confirmed, Latifi would run his last race for Williams at home in next week's Canadian Grand Prix. From then on, Piastri would take over as Alexander Albon's teammate with a contract at least until the end of 2023.

As Piastri was already scheduled to participate in the first free practice session of the British GP for Alpine, the French team has activated the Australian Jack Doohan, also from F2, to replace his compatriot. It is worth remembering that each team must give two practice sessions to rookies throughout the year, which could benefit the Virtuosi driver.

Both Piastri and Doohan have already had the opportunity to test the Alpine car this year, when they took part in a one-day single test last month with the A521 in Qatar.

Latifi opened his Formula 1 path in 2020, a year after winning second place in F2 for DAMS in a season that ended with the title for Nyck de Vries - who like Piastri, is still waiting for a chance in F1. However, the Canadian showed few moments of brilliance and was constantly outclassed in the infighting by George Russell, before also losing out in comparison to Alexander Albon.

Before the British GP race that could mark Piastri's debut, Formula 1 has a stop in Canada. The ninth round of the season is scheduled to take place this weekend, between June 17 and 19. The Silverstone race, meanwhile, will be held between July 1 and 3.
