Verstappen praises "intelligent" Schumacher in "entertaining battle" at British GP

Max Verstappen and Mick Schumacher fought for seventh place at the Silverstone GP until the last corner. The Dutchman praised the fight, but revealed that he went all or nothing against the German

Max Verstappen was on his way to another victory in the 2022 Formula One season at Silverstone until he ran over an AlphaTauri debris that damaged his Red Bull. The Dutchman continued in the race, but with limited performance ended up only seventh after holding off German Mick Schumacher in a fight that lasted until the last corner.

"My car was dragging. But I knew Mick was really trying to go for seventh place and it was fun. Of course, I wasn't enjoying where I was, but you can also enjoy the fight you're having with someone else. I think it was a really good battle," praised Verstappen after the race.

Mick earned his first Formula One points of his career last Sunday at the British GP. The Haas driver was not satisfied with eighth place, and tried a maneuver in the last corner, but was closed by Max, who only hoped Schumacher would back off and avoid contact that could end in disaster for both of them.

"I said to him, 'I knew you were fighting for the points.' He said: 'Yes, I know, but I really wanted seventh place. I said, 'I know you did, I saw that! It was a good battle," said the Dutchman.

"I thought, 'Well, he has to back off, otherwise we are both out'. Fortunately, he was smart enough to [do that]," revealed the reigning world champion.

With the result, Verstappen remains at the top of the Drivers' World Championship after ten races with 181 points, 34 more than his teammate Sergio Pérez. Mick moved up to 17th place with the four points he got at Silverstone. Formula One returns this Sunday for the Austrian Grand Prix, with full coverage by GRANDE PRÊMIO.
