Verstappen calls for race management to be less "stubborn" and closer to the drivers

The FIA recently announced the permanent departure of Michael Masi, formerly Formula 1's race director. The category will now have two race directors in 2022, with Portuguese Eduardo Freitas and German Niels Wittich. The lack of consistency in decision making has worried some drivers, but for Max Verstappen, what is missing is for the new management to get closer to the drivers and be less "stubborn."

"I don't think it necessarily depends on being a race director, I think it's more about working with the drivers rather than just maintaining your stance and being stubborn. We want to improve for everyone and it's not like we're fighting for ourselves," said the reigning Formula One champion.

"We have good conversations among the drivers and at the end of the day, more or less, we agree on most things. Of course, everyone has their own opinions about certain things. The rest are the racing incidents. Yes, for sure we can do better. I think we will work on it, we will try to make it better," concluded the Red Bull driver.

The Austrian GP last Sunday (10) was marked by numerous punishments for track limits, something that irritated Verstappen. His rival, Charles Leclerc, is not happy with the race management either. The Monegasque revealed that he believes the change to two directors makes it difficult to have more consistency in decisions, but he has no suggestions to solve the problem for the time being.

"I think consistency has always been one thing we've been looking for and you can always be better. Obviously, two race directors probably make things a little more difficult. If it's impossible to achieve a good level of consistency? I don't think so. So I really don't have any solution for the time being. But I think that probably with one race director it might be a bit easier to manage," explained the Ferrari driver.

Formula One returns in two weeks, on July 24th, for the French GP at the Paul Ricard circuit.
