Max Verstappen even praised the pace of the RB18 in Hungary, but regretted the problem with his car in Q3 that prevented him from fighting for pole position
Max Verstappen was denied a chance at pole-position by his car trouble in Q3. It seemed that the Dutchman had problems with his engine, as he said he was "out of power" in the last minutes of the session. The best was George Russell, who, with no threat from the reigning champion, beat Carlos Sainz to take pole.
Max didn't give too many details and reiterated that he hasn't had a conversation with the taurine team to clarify what really happened. However, he believes it is not a problem for the race and positively assessed the RB18's pace.
"It's unfortunate. I don't think it was a big problem, but it wasn't something we could solve on the track," he said. "Anyway, that was the positive point today, we understood what went wrong and the car was much better today to drive on a track that really doesn't suit us," he assessed.
The result for the #1 was the tenth position on the starting grid - his worst qualifying result of the year. Still, he relies on the pace of his car to take him to the front.
"So, [the pace] is pretty positive for the rest of the year anyway. On a track where we are not so strong, we can be competitive," he added.
"But of course I would still like to start in the top three, I think we had the pace for that because in Q2 we looked very strong," he closed.
