Verstappen and Alonso on the front row in Montreal

Max Verstappen will start from the front at the Canadian Grand Prix after taking pole position in wet qualifying.

Verstappen and Carlos Sainz exchanged best times in the first attempts in Q3, with their respective teammates missing the decisive segment.

Sergio Perez crashed and was eliminated in Q2, while Charles Leclerc also exited that session due to grid punishment that will put him last on the grid.

Verstappen eventually took the top spot with a 1m21.299s, while Fernando Alonso followed up his TL3 form and knocked his compatriot off the front row. Sainz finished third.

Lewis Hamilton was fourth, while Haas had their best qualifying of the year with Kevin Magnussen fifth and Mick Schumacher sixth.

With everyone using intermediate tires, George Russell took a chance on slicks, but came up short. The Briton slid off the track and was eighth, behind Esteban Ocon.

Daniel Ricciardo and Zhou Guanyu - who advanced to Q3 for the first time in his Formula One career - completed the top 10.

Q2 began with several drivers swapping the rain tires they had used in Q1 for the intermediates.

With 10 minutes remaining, Alex Albon hit the barriers at turn 6, but managed to reverse and return to the circuit.

Moments later, Perez caused another yellow flag when he escaped at turn 3. The yellow turned to red as he stayed put, ending his participation in the session.

Times dropped quickly when action resumed with nine minutes to go. Schumacher impressed by finishing Q2 in sixth, and his teammate Magnussen also advanced.

Valtteri Bottas and Albon were out in 11th and 12th, respectively, with Perez in 13th and Lando Norris - who reported engine problems during the stoppage - in 14th.

Leclerc did not make a lap in Q2. The Ferrari driver will start last due to the engine-related penalty, meaning that those who qualified behind him will gain one position.

Q1 had the wettest track and was particularly disappointing for Aston Martin. Despite impressing in free practice, Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll did not go beyond 17th and 18th.

Also eliminated were Pierre Gasly, Nicholas Latifi and Yuki Tsunoda, who would have already started on the last row because of an engine penalty.
