Carlos Sainz had pole position in his hands, but George Russell surprised by setting the fastest time at the last moment and giving Mercedes their first pole position of the year. Sainz can still start the Hungarian Grand Prix on the front row and therefore can be satisfied with his performance.
Sainz has had a difficult start to the current Formula One season, but seems to be adapting to the Ferrari F1-75. "Definitely feeling better and better with every race and every qualifying session. Today I felt I had the pace to take pole position," said the Spaniard after qualifying.
Sainz is recovering from losing pole, but believes Ferrari has a good chance of victory on Sunday. "I think we have the pace. Obviously, the start and tire management will play a key role, as always," the Ferrari driver continued.
Russell may be on pole, but Mercedes is not expected to set the pace in the race. "Mercedes' pace is a bit of an unknown and we will have to see how the race unfolds tomorrow. If we catch them at the start, the better," Sainz concluded.
