Despite falling behind Charles Leclerc and the Red Bull duo, Carlos Sainz preferred to look on the bright side of Saturday's qualifying session in Baku, saying he went to the limit with Ferrari
For an instant in Q3 of qualifying this Saturday (11) in Baku, Carlos Sainz glimpsed the possibility of finally starting from pole position in the 2022 Formula 1 season. His time of 1min41s814, however, was beaten not only by teammate Charles Leclerc, the fastest of the day, but also by Red Bull duo Sergio Pérez and Max Verstappen. But the Spaniard preferred to highlight his good pace in the session, saying he went to the limit and felt he was in the fight.
Sainz took a scratch on the wall late in qualifying that cost him a few precious tenths, finishing fourth. "It's a shame, but at the same time we made progress throughout the day," the Ferrari representative pointed out.
"I felt I was in contention for pole, especially after the last few races, especially Monaco, which I wasn't, so it's progress. That's what happens when you get to the limit: sometimes you stay first, but sometimes you pass the point," continued the Spaniard.
In the race, Sainz believes he can achieve an even better result, since the starting position does not influence as much as in Monte Carlo, for example.
"We can still play with everything tomorrow. The starting position here doesn't matter so much, so we will push," he finished.
