Sainz refuses to avoid a duel with Leclerc at the Austrian GP: "We are both in the fight

Carlos Sainz found the sprint race entertaining and declined to say that he and Charles Leclerc should avoid infighting on Sunday

Is the team united at Ferrari? The rumors that surfaced after the decision that favored Carlos Sainz at last week's British GP were denied by all the protagonists of the Maranello team, but statements after this Saturday's (9) sprint race in Austria caused the talk to gain traction again. Charles Leclerc and Sainz fought for second position and ultimately had very different impressions about what they should do tomorrow.

Asked whether the team should avoid the fight between the two drivers to focus solely on Red Bull, something Leclerc nodded to, Sainz went in the opposite direction from his teammate.

"The important thing is to know that we are both in the fight and we will try our best to overtake Max," he said

Sainz enjoyed his race and came away with the impression that, after the first few laps, Ferrari had the strength to trouble Max Verstappen.

"I started well and had a fight with Verstappen in turn three. Then with Charles also in turn three. It was fun and a good race," he assessed.

"But I probably overheated my tires a bit and had to let Charles pull away at the end. First of all, we need to improve our race pace a little bit," he continued.

"Max had a very strong pace from the start, but then we seemed to start matching it. The race is long tomorrow and anything can happen. We will try our best to overtake him tomorrow," he finished.
