Carlos Sainz managed to finish in the top five twice during the first two free practice sessions in Azerbaijan. At the same time, both times he was far behind Charles Leclerc's performance, so there is work for him to do.

The Spaniard has been doing his best to compete with his teammate all season, but for now the Monegasque is way ahead. On Friday, Sainz can be reasonably satisfied with a fourth and fifth time, although Leclerc was fastest in the final session.

"It was an interesting Friday, as always here in Baku," Sainz began in a press release. "There were some challenges during TL1 and I was struggling a bit too much with the bottom and the kicks, which made the session quite uncomfortable."

The second free practice session was better, according to Sainz. "Overall, it was a quiet second session, although we weren't able to close a full lap with the soft ones due to the yellow flags. We are looking forward to taking another step forward tomorrow and having a clean qualifying," he concluded.
