In his 150th GP, Carlos Sainz managed to take the first pole of his Formula One career. Although the Spaniard thought his lap was not exactly worthy of pole, it just goes to show that anything can happen in the treacherous conditions around Silverstone.
"I did a lap that wasn't anything special, I stomped hard and it was a surprise to see it on pole position," said Sainz, who also admits to struggling throughout the final session.
"I was struggling with the standing water on the intermediate tires, more on the racing line. It was easy to make a mistake and lose the lap. Even harder to get the temperature in those conditions," commented the Ferrari driver.
"I think so, the pace was there all weekend except for TL3, but we think we've corrected that. We should be in a good position to stay at the front, but I'm sure Max and Charles will add a lot of pressure," Sainz added.
"Thank you very much. Thank you to the fans. Thank you all for staying in the rain. We struggled with this rain, but we can say that you are used to it," Sainz joked with the Silverstone crowd, as the weather during qualifying was typically British.
