The Ferrari driver won Spain's 33rd victory in Formula 1 - 32 of them are Fernando Alonso's. The European nation tied with the United States and entered the top-10 of countries with more wins in the category
In addition to finally joining the ranks of winning Formula 1 drivers, Carlos Sainz made history in another way with his triumph in Sunday's British Grand Prix. After crossing the finish line in first place at Silverstone, the driver became only the second Spanish driver to claim a victory in motor sport's biggest category - but the feat did move Spain into the historic top-10.
That's because, of course, there is such a driver named Fernando Alonso who 'gave the country a helping hand'. In the list of nations with the most wins in F1, the Spain of the two-time world champion and Sainz is now tied with the United States for 10th place with 33 wins. The Alpine driver, of course, was responsible for 32 of them.
The Americans triumphed in Formula 1 with 15 different drivers: Johnnie Parsons, Lee Wallard, Troy Ruttman, Bill Vukovich, Bob Sweikert, Pat Flaherty, Sam Hanks, Jimmy Bryan, Rodger Ward, Jim Rathmann, Phil Hill (world champion in 1961), Dan Gurney, Richie Ginther, Peter Revson, and Mario Andretti. The latter, who also won the title in 1978 - the date of the last US victory in F1.
The top three countries with the most wins in the main category of motor racing are Great Britain in first, with 307; Germany in second, with 179; and Brazil in third, with 101. In addition to these nations, France, Finland, Italy, Australia, Austria, and Argentina, in order, complete the list.
The 2022 Formula One season returns next week in Spielberg for the Austrian GP on July 8-10.
