George Russell will start the 2022 Hungarian GP from pole position, the first for Mercedes this season. The British driver also takes his first career pole, the 105th driver to do so in Formula One.

By its own admission, Mercedes has been doing poorly this season, but still manages to be third in the constructors' championship. The German team has been trying to find a way back to the front in the last 13 stages.

Russell wants to salvage the momentum and identify how that happened after what was one of his worst practices on Friday. "I'm over the moon, absolutely rattled. Yesterday was probably the worst of the season, and everyone last night worked really hard. We didn't know which direction to go," Russell said in the post-session interviews.

"Turns 1 and 2 were mega. The lap times kept coming, it was an amazing feeling to see P1. We need to analyze and understand where that came from today. We have some ideas," the Mercedes driver continued.

But the young British driver kept his feet on the ground and is aware that the job is not finished yet. "But there are no points for qualifying. We had a good race pace, but the Ferraris looked very fast on Friday. We will try," he added.
