George Russell was the only driver to risk slick tires during Q3, but the gamble went wrong and he spun shortly after opening his lap.
"Big risk, big reward," Russell declared to . "I think it was literally just turn 1."
The Brit found a large puddle of water at that point of the circuit that caused the grip to immediately disappear from his soft tires, causing his spin.
"If it had been as dry as the other corners, we could have got a good position. My lap was only half a second away from fourth place."
Russell knew he had good pace in his W13, but felt that wasn't enough for him.
"I said over the radio that I'm not here to settle for fourth or fifth place and that we needed to try things."
Ultimately, Russell had to settle for eighth on the grid. His teammate Lewis Hamilton secured his best starting position of 2022 so far, fourth place.
