Russell admits mistake and sets goal for England: "Pass Norris and Alonso fast".

George Russell believes Mercedes is capable of fighting with Ferrari and Red Bull, so he wants to catch up fast

Mercedes continued to show, on Saturday (2), that it has evolved for this weekend's British GP. Even so, George Russell was bad in Q3 and will start only in eighth place. The Englishman admitted he made a mistake at the final moment, but reinforced: he is very confident in the car he has in his hands for Sunday's race.

Russell is a long way from Lewis Hamilton, who will start fifth. Between them are Lando Norris and Fernando Alonso. So, confident that Mercedes can challenge the top cars on the grid, he aims to leave them both in the dust early on Sunday at Silverstone. Then he can think about dueling with the others.

"As qualifying went on, everything got worse and worse. I was very confident in Q1 and was in the top-3 most of the time, but then we didn't have that in Q3 when it mattered. We had pace to finish fourth or fifth today," he lamented.

"I made a mistake on the last lap, so I'm a bit disappointed, but the pace was there. We were strong in TL3 with the dry track, and it will be dry tomorrow. Our simulations with plenty of fuel are on the same level as the guys in front," he continued.

"I want to pass Lando and Fernando as fast as possible to get into the fight at the front. I don't think there is any reason why we should be out of that race," he finished.
