Ferrari has been criticized - and even ridiculed - for what is becoming a comedy of errors by the drivers and the team, despite apparently having the fastest car.
"They put everything they could into the 2022 car," declared Alexey Popov, Russian Formula 1 commentator for . "And they succeeded."
"However, they are not ready to fight for the title. Ferrari can mess up everything - engines, tactics, drivers' mistakes and so on."
"I don't know how you can fight for a title like that. It's not so scary to be criticized, but it's scary to be ridiculed. It's impossible to imagine this in the days of Jean Todt and Ross Brawn."
Norbert Haug, former Mercedes boss, agrees that Leclerc's mistake at the French GP is a "punch in the stomach" for his championship hopes.
"Even if Leclerc gets 10 wins now, he still might not be champion, which shows how difficult it has gotten for him. Because beating Verstappen in 10 races will not be easy at all," he told .
"Fortunately, Mattia Binotto is calm and serene - it's really amazing he doesn't lose his coolness. I believe it's a very positive quality," Haug added.
Regardless of whether this is enough for Leclerc's recovery, Red Bull is not celebrating yet.
"With Budapest, there is now a track that should be better for Ferrari. Only after the summer recess will we have more suitable races for us," said Helmut Marko.
Therefore, team boss Christian Horner says that the development of the car will continue for the time being.
"We have a scheme that provides the most efficient development possible according to the budget ceiling," he explained. "At the moment, there are no plans to deviate from it."
Marko confirms, "Updates will no longer be as serious, but we will still have some in the second half of the season. Our advantage is big, but probably bigger than it should be when you look at the performance of the two cars."
Marko also expects Verstappen to take a grid penalty in the latter part of the season to have a new engine not scheduled.
"We will need to choose a track where it is easy to overtake. A lot can still happen. I believe you would have to win 10 or 12 races to have a realistic chance at the championship."
