Max Verstappen was the fastest on track in the opening stages of the British GP. Carlos Sainz was overtaken and the gap increased to about two seconds. The reigning world champion could not enjoy the race for long, as a piece of carbon fiber caused damage to the floorboard. It is now known how this happened.

On lap 12, Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda in the two AlphaTauri cars were seventh and eighth. The team from Faenza had a dramatic Friday in terms of speed and qualifying was helped a bit by the rain.

However, Q3 was not reached and with two cars in the top ten, it seemed to be a matter of consolidation. Tsunoda spun, however, taking Gasly with him and preventing both from achieving a good result.

The consequences were greater than this, however, as the touch caused a piece of carbon to be left on the track. Max Verstappen, driving for "big sister" Red Bull, had to go into the pits at the start. He also lost a lot of downforce because of the damage. Christian Horner confirmed to Adam Cooper afterwards that Max Verstappen had problems due to Tsunoda's slide.

Sergio Perez also suffered damage early in the race after a collision with Charles Leclerc. He had to stop early to replace his front wing, but eventually managed to recover well to finish second. "The driver recovering from half a lap behind to the podium is an incredible result," Horner told Sky Sports.
