Sergio Pérez abandoned the Canadian GP on Sunday due to mechanical problems in his Red Bull. In the ninth lap, the Mexican accelerated at the exit of turn 7 and lost power. Without being able to increase the pace, he was quickly overtaken by the drivers behind him until he parked the car in the escape area of turn 8.

Soon after the race, Checo explained what made him abandon the race, and regretted the troubled weekend. "It was a gearbox problem. After turn 7 I lost the steering. It was a weekend to forget," Pérez stated.

After a sequence of good results, the Mexican driver had problems throughout the weekend. Sergio had problems in the second free practice, finishing only in 11th place. On Saturday, the situation only got worse when he made a mistake in qualifying and crashed head-on, falling in Q2.

Starting only in 13th position, Checo had been making a recovery run and had already gained two positions before the mechanical problems. This was Pérez's second retirement of the season. The first was in the opening race of the season, at the Bahrain GP.
