Sergio Pérez had a difficult weekend in Montreal that ended with the Mexican leaving the race after just nine laps with engine trouble in his Red Bull
Sergio Pérez abandoned the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday (19) because of engine problems in his Red Bull. The Mexican tried to accelerate at the exit of turn 7 and his power unit failed. Without any performance, he was quickly overtaken by his opponents who were following him, and ended up parking the car on the escape area of turn 8.
The race direction activated the virtual safety-car to remove the Red Bull car. Some drivers, among them the Czech's own teammate Max Verstappen and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, took advantage of the situation to change from medium to hard tires.
Pérez had not been having a good weekend. The Mexican had problems in the second free practice, finishing only in eleventh place. On Saturday, the situation only got worse when Sergio made a mistake in qualifying and crashed head-on, falling in Q2.
Starting only in 13th position, the Czech had been making a recovery run and had already gained two positions before the mechanical problems. This was Pérez's second retirement of the season. The first was in the opening race of the season, at the Bahrain GP.
