Red Bull boss Christian Horner has warned that Sergio Perez needs to perform well to keep his place, despite having recently signed a two-year contract extension.
This means that drivers in Red Bull's junior program will have to wait longer for a spot in the top team, and Horner fully understands how frustrating this must be for them.
"Well, Sergio's renewal for the next two years obviously locks up the seat unless he doesn't deliver for whatever reason in 2023 or early 2024," Horner told .
"So for someone like Pierre Gasly or Alex (Albon), that's incredibly frustrating because that seat is blocked."
However, despite not being able to guarantee a place in the main team because Perez is performing as expected, Horner confirmed that the team will do everything it can to keep its juniors in Formula One.
"What we will do is try to help them stay in F1 so that we still have the possibility to look at their talent and see how that is emerging," Horner said.
"Because Sergio is not getting any younger, he is already 32 years old and this may well be the last contract he signs."
