While Max Verstappen was fighting for pole position (and narrowly missed it), the Mexican himself was nowhere near the best time. "In these changing conditions, today was a good result for us. Obviously, I wanted more and I'm not totally satisfied, but we can fight from there and I'm looking forward to it," Perez said in the Red Bull press release after finishing fourth in qualifying.
That the gap to the front was a little larger than normal, according to the 32-year-old driver, was due to traffic. "It wasn't ideal, but on the other hand I'm not too disappointed because at the end of Q3 I had Stroll right in front of me, so my last two laps were not ideal and maybe there was a bit more without that," he explained.
It seems unlikely that Perez was bothered by Lance Stroll's Aston Martin, as the Canadian driver was already out in Q1. It is not known which driver he was talking about.
From the second row of the grid, there is still much to be possible, although a win is very difficult with his teammate Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc ahead of him.
"It will be important to stay in contention and have a strong pace in tomorrow's race, so things could look very different. We have made good progress so I will be confident, hopefully we can give the Ferraris a hard time. it will be hard, but we will fight hard," Perez concluded.
