Mercedes praises Russell's boldness and believes that strategy will set the tone in Montreal

Mercedes had a good performance on the wet Montreal Circuit this Saturday (18). Lewis Hamilton's fourth place and George Russell's eighth place showed that the team was very competitive, but still lacks something more.

At least, this is the view of team boss Toto Wolff. The grid positions for Sunday's race were not enough to satisfy the Mercedes leader. "Finishing in P4 and P8 is below what we could have achieved."

Toto reviewed Hamilton's qualifying performance, but lamented a strategy error that could have placed the seven-time champion higher up the grid. "Lewis did a great job in Q3, but unfortunately he set his time one lap early and didn't get the track in better conditions. Potentially, he could have been second."

Wolff did not fail to praise Russell's attitude and was overly supportive of the Brit's decision to ask for soft tires to attempt the first pole-position of his career. "I loved his choice, it was worth the gamble. This is the time to take risks and I'm open to bold decisions like that. It could be a heroic moment for George, but today it didn't work out.

Glimpsing good points for Sunday's race, the Mercedes boss believes that the mix on the grid leaves everything open. "Looking ahead to the race and with warmer and drier weather forecast, I believe opportunities will arise according to strategy and with our season opponents out of position," Wolff analyzed.
