Toto Wolff, Mercedes' CEO and team boss, opened the chance for a bold strategy to puncture rivals in Azerbaijan
After a very problematic start to the weekend due to the Baku street kicks, Mercedes can't complain too much about qualifying for the Azerbaijan GP, which took place late on Saturday morning (11). George Russell and Lewis Hamilton will start, respectively, in fifth and seventh position. Much more than that only with a bold strategy on Sunday, something the team says is possible.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said that the race-conscious expectation is to occupy the two positions below Ferrari and Red Bull - with Hamilton overtaking Pierre Gasly, sixth on the grid, therefore. But he left in the air that the team has among its possibilities the chance to take a risk.
"If you look in the dream world, we can expect the top four to crash at turn one and it's possible to win the race," he joked.
"Realistically speaking, judging only the pace, what you can do is finish fifth and sixth," he continued.
"Strategy can play an important role. You can gain some positions if you have the right strategy. And we can make a bet... When you are in the role of the hunter, the situation is different," concluded the Mercedes strongman.
