Mercedes announces historic investment in SAF

Mercedes has announced a major investment in sustainable aviation fuel, becoming the first global sports team to do so.

Like F1 itself, Mercedes is working to reduce its CO2 emissions and become Net Zero by 2030.

The Silverware have focused on understanding their impact on the environment - as they race on multiple continents - and continue to look for ways to drive change.

"As Formula 1 operates at the forefront of automotive technology, we have a responsibility to ensure we are at the forefront of innovation in sustainable technologies," Mercedes said in a statement.

As such, the team believes that its multi-million dollar investment in SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) will "significantly improve" its overall environmental impact, and further aid its journey to becoming Net Zero.

The impact of Mercedes' investment

Sustainable aviation fuel is renewable or waste-derived aviation fuel. It is an emerging technology that can play an important role in reducing future emissions from international aviation.

Aviation accounts for more than a quarter of a Formula One team's carbon footprint, and so by using SAF, the team aims to take a big step towards its goal of being Net Zero by 2030.

Current production and availability of SAF is limited, but Mercedes believes the "opportunity is immense" and hopes that its support for the development and growth of SAF will show its potential to other industries, encouraging others to invest in its production.
