Michael Masi has spoken about his departure from the FIA several months after he was fired as Formula One's race director.
When Masi was replaced in February, the FIA announced that it would offer him a new position within the federation amid changes at the top of F1's race direction.
However, on Tuesday, it was confirmed that Masi has left the FIA for good.
Now, in a statement released by the Australian website , Masi commented on his time at the FIA and clarified the reasons for his departure.
"It has been a pleasure and an honor to represent the FIA as Single-Position Sports Director, F1 Race Director and Safety Delegate since the unexpected and tragic death of Charlie (Whiting) in Melbourne 2019," he said.
"Having worked on various projects around the world with the federation and its member clubs for over a decade prior to my appointment, I have now decided to leave the organization and return to Australia to be closer to my family and friends."
"I am proud to have worked many years in partnership with the various FIA member clubs, the Formula One Group, the competitors, promoters and circuit operators, my colleagues and staff internally at the FIA.
"I will always cherish these lifelong friendships and relationships that I have developed throughout my journey so far."
Masi also paid tribute to Whiting and several other important figures at the FIA, as well as family and friends for the support shown during a challenging period.
"In particular, I am eternally grateful to Herbie Blash and the late Charlie Whiting for identifying me as a future successor in 2018, a role I was eager to learn from Charlie for many years before his shocking death."
"I also transfer my sincere gratitude to former FIA President Jean Todt, Stefano Domenicali and my dedicated FIA Monoposition team for their support and guidance during my time."
"I extend my gratitude to the thousands of dedicated volunteers and directors who enable motorsport to happen every day around the world, as the safety of the competitors and everyone involved has always been my top priority."
"Thank you to FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and his team for their personal support since his election and I wish them all the best for the future."
"The personal support from my family, friends and colleagues during this journey and particularly over the past few months can only be described as incredible and something I will treasure forever."
