Madrid says it is still waiting for F1's answer on possibilities to host GP

The city of Madrid is experiencing a good moment in sports. After Real Madrid's 14th Champions League title, it was Carlos Sainz's turn in Formula 1 to win his first victory - and become only the second Spaniard to achieve such a feat. In the wake of this, the mayor of the Spanish capital, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has expressed a willingness to host an F1 GP in the future, but already saying that it is a very 'raw' idea.

Still, the Madrid government has made the proposal to F1 and the FIA - through a letter, sent last month - who have not yet responded. Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who is President of the Community of Madrid, reiterated that they are "waiting for the FIA to contact us to jointly evaluate the letter."

Martínez-Almeida's idea was to host a race starting in 2026. "It is something that is being discussed and that, by the Community of Madrid and the institutions, is seen as a preliminary idea. Formula 1 is one of the few major events that Madrid has never hosted and it is a subject that should be explored, although at this moment this possibility is very preliminary," he commented.

The big question is the venue. According to AS newspaper, there is the Circuit de Jarama, but it does not have the infrastructure required by Formula 1. The other option would be to build a new track in Morata de Tajuña, but it would require a million-dollar cost of more than 30 million euros.

Of all the Spanish drivers who have ever been in F1, only two have managed to climb to the top of the podium: besides Sainz, two-time champion Fernando Alonso has won 32 races.
