Charles Leclerc moved back into second place for the 2022 season after winning the Austrian GP and seeing Sergio Pérez retire
The string of misfortunes is over! Charles Leclerc finally got the job done after having chances to win and, in fact, won the race. In the Austrian GP this Sunday (10), he overtook Max Verstappen three times and would pass as many times as necessary to get the better of him. Thus, he regained his F1 2022 second-place finish.
Leclerc took the 25 points for the win and jumped to 170 points for the season. The gap to Verstappen is still high, at 38 points, but at least it is a reason for hope. Max need not leave Red Bull's home race desolate, as he was second, won the sprint race and finished with the fastest lap of the race. All in all, he scored only five points less than the Monegasque and has 208.
Former World Championship vice-leader Sergio Perez was zeroed out for the second time in three races. The reason was a touch with George Russell right at the start, which forced the Mexican driver to stop immediately in the pits. After a few laps of trying to recover, he stopped again and abandoned. He still has 151 shots, just as Carlos Sainz still has the 133 he had at the start. The Spaniard abandoned after a Ferrari engine blew up.
+ THE DRIVERS' AND CONSTRUCTORS' WORLD STANDINGS AFTER GP OF AUSTRIA
George Russell has again finished in the top five of a race and has 128 points, while Lewis Hamilton has crossed the century mark and reached 109. Lando Norris (64), Esteban Ocon (52), Valtteri Bottas (46) and Fernando Alonso (29) round out the top-10.
In the Constructors' World Championship, the variation is the same caused by Leclerc and Verstappen among the drivers, as Sainz and Pérez scored nothing. Red Bull has 359 against Ferrari's 303. Mercedes has pulled a little closer and has 257, but is still far behind.
The sequence has McLaren and Alpine tied (81), Alfa Romeo (51), Haas (34), AlphaTauri (27), Aston Martin (18), and Williams (3).
The 2022 Formula One season continues in two weeks from July 22-24 at Paul Ricard in the French GP.
