Charles Leclerc had to come from behind and ended up crossing the finish line in fifth place. The Ferrari driver gained ten important points in the world championship, although he saw Max Verstappen shoot up. Leclerc points out that the damage could have been even greater.
"I liked the last part of the race," Leclerc said after the race. "The middle part and the first part were very frustrating. I was stuck in a DRS train, then stuck behind Esteban (Ocon) who was on new tires and at turn 10 he had very good traction, I just couldn't pass him."
When swapping the hard tires for medium, something went wrong with the Ferrari pit crew. The pit stop lasted more than five seconds, which ended up costing a lot. "As a result, I got stuck behind a DRS train again," he lamented.
"The finish was fun. I had a lot of overtaking. P5 was the best we could have done today. That's ten points that could be very valuable in the end," the Ferrari driver concluded.
The gap between Verstappen and Leclerc has now increased to 49 points. Carlos Sainz was still important for Leclerc by setting the fastest lap and thus taking an extra point off Verstappen. Otherwise the gap would have been exactly 50 points.
