Latifi celebrates "great achievement" in qualifying, but expects little from GP of England

Nicholas Latifi starts 10th in the British GP, the best starting position of his career and of Williams in 2022. But the Canadian is holding back his excitement and hopes to stay behind on Sunday

Nicholas Latifi was the big name of the British GP qualifying. This Saturday (2), the Canadian surprised and put Williams in Q3, securing the tenth place on the starting grid. But Nicholas ended the day divided between happiness for the result and the feeling that he might be left behind in the race.

After achieving the best starting position of his career and also Williams' best in 2022, Latifi valued the team's sagacity to always give the driver a free track in England, dodging even more traffic with the rain.

"A very special day in adverse conditions. To get to Q2 was a great achievement and gave me extra confidence, but to get to Q3 was much more than we could have hoped for. I came out of the pits already knowing that I had something good in the car and I just got into a rhythm. The team did a great job in Q1 and Q2, keeping me in the right track position all the time," he said.

But Nicholas knows it will be very difficult for him to score on Sunday. The Canadian already accepts the fact, even though he wants to try something different in his strategy.

"We saw in Q2 how important it was to get the timing right before the track got worse because of the rain. Not being able to ride in Q3 was frustrating, but overall, great job by everyone and a good day. But we have to be realistic: we are ahead of faster cars, we need to focus on getting the most out of our tires and taking our chances in the strategy," he added.
