7th in Saturday's qualifying, the seven-time world champion regretted the missed opportunity to 1-2 Mercedes on the starting grid for the Hungarian GP
While teammate George Russell will start from pole position on the starting grid for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton will begin the race in seventh place. After Saturday's qualifying practice, the seven-time world champion revealed the reason for his performance at the Hungaroring.
"I tried to open the mobile wing, but I couldn't. I was feeling great. I was feeling great. The front row was fully reachable - it would have been amazing to get that, but these things happen," he justified, regretting the wasted 1-2 opportunity.
Still, Hamilton made a point of congratulating Russell and emphasized that not even Mercedes expected such a performance in Hungary.
"Congratulations to George, he did an amazing job and it's a great result for the team. Taking into consideration everything we've been through this season, it's a great achievement - I'm very happy for everyone. We definitely didn't expect this," said the seven-time champion.
