Lewis Hamilton hopes Mercedes will reduce the number of experiments on its W13 during race weekends after taking a step forward in Canada.
Hamilton has been regularly offering himself as a guinea pig this season for Mercedes to test new parts, which often gives his teammate George Russell an advantage.
"Maybe George can do the experiments in the second half of the season," Hamilton joked.
However, the seven-time world champion hopes that the progress seen in Montreal means less experimentation and more trouble-free track time during practice.
"We are trying to progress as a team. I think we will be a little bit more cautious with too much experimentation because it really hurts your weekend, especially if only TL1 and TL2 are in the dry, you are without TL3."
"I believe we can learn a lot on the weekends and make improvements for the future. However, we had a great pace. It was very good to see, it hasn't always been like this with this car."
Hamilton has set his team the goal of giving him a car capable of fighting for wins by the British GP, now less than two weeks away.
In the final laps in Montreal, for a moment he thought his wish had been fulfilled as he prepared for a duel with Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz.
However, the W13 does not yet have enough speed to really challenge the front-runners, but Silverstone is expected to be a circuit that favors Mercedes' strengths more.
"Thinking about Silverstone, such an important race for us and for me, I really want to be in the battle with those guys," he continued.
"In the end, when the safety car came in and we re-started, I was hoping to get into the fight. The dream was to stay in the battle with them and find a way, but they were fast! But we will get there.
