Pierre Gasly feels that Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari are harder to catch up with in 2022 and regrets becoming a "seventh place" driver
With only two appearances in the points in 2022, Pierre Gasly does not hide his frustration with the results achieved with AlphaTauri so far this season. If in 2021 he was a constant presence in the top-10, with 15 of 22 races in the points and ninth place in the Drivers' World Championship, the situation in this championship is different.
2022 is the year that marks the beginning of the new Formula 1 regulations, which sought to decrease the turbulence in the cars and bring the grid closer together. However, Pierre feels that Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes are harder to catch up with in this championship. The Frenchman has only 6 points so far.
"The top-3 were indeed faster, but they weren't in a different league, so I was able to bother them once in a while. This year? No chance. Only Bottas can challenge them, we are basically fighting for seventh place. It's sad because the goal was to be closer," Pierre said in an interview with German website Motorsport Total.
The only driver outside the Red Bull-Ferrari-Mercedes trio to win a podium in 2022 was McLaren's Lando Norris at the Emilia-Romagna GP. For Andreas Seidl, team boss of the Woking team, it will take time to notice the impact of the regulation changes because of the consolidated structure of the big teams, accumulated over the years.
"It takes a little longer to see the effect. We should not forget that the teams that are ahead of us at the moment have a long-built infrastructure and organization. They are focused on making the best use of the infrastructure, they are established organizations in terms of people and talent as well. And what they are doing is benefiting from that, where they do a spectacular and better job than we do," he commented.
Formula 1 returns next Sunday (12) with the Azerbaijan GP, at the Baku street circuit. In the last edition of this race, Pierre Gasly recorded his most recent podium finish, coming in third.
