Gasly decides future and renews with AlphaTauri for 2023 season

Pierre Gasly is guaranteed for the next Formula 1 season. His fate is not new: the Frenchman will continue at AlphaTauri in 2023. As communicated this Friday (24), the 24-year-old driver has renewed his deal with the Faenza-based team for another year.

"I have been with this team for five years and proud of the journey we have spent together and the progress we have made. I am happy to continue with my team AlphaTauri. The new regulations this year have created new challenges for us and being able to plan our development with the team for the next 18 months is a good basis to work on for the future," he said.

The definition of Gasly's future was something that had been much speculated about. This is because after Sergio Perez's renewal with Red Bull until 2024, the #10 was left with no room to try a possible return to the top team. In this period, other possibilities on the grid were raised.

However, during the Canadian GP, Franz Tost, the Italian's boss, said that Pierre was "100% confirmed" with the team. With the announcement this morning, he only confirmed the continuity of the work with the young Frenchman. "We are very pleased to confirm that Pierre is staying with us for 2023. He is definitely in the group of the best and most competitive drivers in F1 and has proven his skills throughout his time with us," he stated.

"Without a doubt, Pierre can play an important role in the team having a successful season next year and it will be up to us to provide him with a competitive car so that he can continue to deliver excellent results," he continued.

Gasly already has a long history with the team. He made his F1 debut in 2017, still with Toro Rosso. Two years later, he moved up to the top team, but failed to perform like Max Verstappen and was replaced by Alexander Albon after just 12 races.

Back at Toro Rosso, which became AlphaTauri in 2020, Gasly was reborn. He took his first category win at the 2020 Italian GP and passed the 100-point mark last season. He also has three podiums with the Italians. The counterpoint, however, is the unremarkable 2022 season. So far, Pierre is in 11th position in the Drivers' World Championship, with only 16 points.

The next commitment now is the British GP, which takes place on July 1-3.
