Hungaroring Circuit - Hungary
F1 arrives at the technical, narrow and winding Hungaroring, situated 12 km northeast of Budapest, whose weather at this time of year is usually quite warm. It will be the 13th race of the 2022 season, and the Reds need to do a double to keep any chance of the title. Hungaroring was the first circuit in the world that was built specifically for F1, looking like a big go-kart track. The track was inaugurated in 1986, when it was the stage for one of the biggest "matches" in F1 history, between Brazilians Piquet and Senna.
Overtaking is possible, but not easy, and tire management is critical. In contrast to recent races, most teams will have high downforce in Hungary, and we are unlikely to see the swings in rear wing choices that we saw at Silverstone, the Red Bull Ring, and Paul Ricard.
The track is the slowest of the permanent circuits on the 2021 calendar, with an average speed of just over 200 kph. There are no long straights and 12 of its 14 corners are rounded at less than 200 kph. Only 55% of the lap is done at full throttle, putting the emphasis on the mechanical and aerodynamic grip generated by the cars.
The Hungaroring is a high-pressure track (the aero load is very similar to that of Monte Carlo), which combined with the high temperatures, the continuous succession of corners, and the absence of aeroThis, combined with the high temperatures, the continuous succession of corners and the absence of long straights, will stress the reliability of the UP elements and especially the mechanical grip, so the suspension setup is of paramount importance.
Saturday's qualifying on this track is very important. The strategy - not counting safety-car or rain - should be only one tire change in the race.
Among the current drivers, Lewis Hamilton has won 8 times in Hungary (2007, 2009, and 2012 with McLaren; 2013, 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2020 with Mercedes). He has also taken pole 8 times. Ferrari has a slight favoritism this year in Hungaroring due to their very good car in corner contouring and traction.
Among the current drivers in F1, Esteban Ocon, Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo have also won in Hungary.
Jenson Button was the driver who started furthest back in P14 and managed to win in 2006.
