FIA proposes solution to budget ceiling controversy

The FIA has made a proposal to end the current budget ceiling controversy by paying teams a lump sum that would offset rising inflation.

While many of the smaller teams insist that the $140 million ceiling should be strictly adhered to this year, others - including Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari - argue that the inflation crisis couldn't be more serious.

According to the , the most recent round of behind-the-scenes meetings related to finances have resulted in a solution proposed by the FIA.

"Formula 1 would pay extra money to all teams, which would not count towards the budget ceiling," revealed correspondent Michael Schmidt. "However, the aid would subsequently be subtracted from the income distribution cake."

It is commented that the amount would be $3 million or 3% of the current $140 million - $4.2 million ceiling.

Alfa Romeo had rejected a simple increase in the budget ceiling because some teams will not even spend $140 million in 2022.

Alpine has also expressed its opposition to an increase, but seems willing to accept the proposed compromise. "If everyone benefits in the same way, we accept it," team boss Otmar Szafnauer said.

Haas boss Gunther Steiner agrees: "It would be a decent compromise because the teams that don't reach the budget limit will also benefit."

However, the proposal has not yet been approved by Stefano Domenicali, F1's chief executive.

"We are looking into it," a Formula One Management source allegedly said. "After all, it is our money that would be distributed here."
