FIA plans changes to combat quiques in 2023

The FIA is working on a series of changes to the Formula 1 technical regulations for 2023 in an attempt to combat quiques.

After the Azerbaijan GP, the federation decided to intervene with a view to protecting drivers from the effects of severe "vertical swings."

Lewis Hamilton, Daniel Ricciardo and several others complained of back pain after the race, while Pierre Gasly revealed he needed painkillers during the weekend.

The FIA has issued a technical directive aimed at preventing teams from racing with a car that could put their drivers at risk. For example, if it bounces too much, the height should be increased so that there is no risk of disqualification.

In principle, these measures were to take effect at the French GP, but they have been postponed until Belgium - where F1 returns from its summer recess.

On Thursday, there was a meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee between the FIA, F1, and technical directors from all 10 teams.

According to the , short-term measures and a long-term solution to the quiques were discussed, with the FIA approving a "constructive" approach in the procedure.

At Spa-Francorchamps, several important measures will come into effect, including increased stiffness of the boards and clarification on how wear will be measured.

In addition, a new metric will be introduced to quantify the kicks - which will have to stay below a certain value during races. Teams will be able to use this metric starting at the French GP to understand the effects on setup.

After an apparent reduction in the clicks in recent events, short-term solutions are seen as necessary because of the upcoming circuits on the calendar, where the effects could worsen again.

However, these short-term measures are not considered to be the definitive solution to the stand-off problem.

This is mainly due to the expectation that cars will generate more downforce as the new era of technical regulation develops, leading to worsening effects without further intervention.

Therefore, several rule changes are being refined by the FIA for the 2023 season.

These will include a 25mm rise in the floorboard edges, a rise in the diffuser throat under the floorboard, the introduction of more rigorous testing of the lateral flexibility of the floorboard, and a more accurate sensor to help quantify aerodynamic oscillation.

All these measures will be submitted to the World Motor Racing Council for consideration and approval.
