Michael Masi has left the FIA months after being offered a new position at the federation following the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi GP.

The events of last year's decisive race were deeply investigated for months, which prompted the replacement of the former F1 race director in February.

At that time, it was announced that the FIA would offer Masi a new position amid the changes at the top of the category's race direction.

However, it has now been confirmed that Masi has left the federation for good.

"The FIA confirms that Michael Masi has decided to leave and return to Australia to be closer to his family and to face new challenges," an FIA statement said.

"He oversaw a three-year period as F1's race director and safety delegate following the sudden death of Charlie Whiting in 2019, carrying out the numerous duties given to him in a professional and dedicated manner."

"The FIA thanks him for his commitment and wishes him all the best for the future."
